2020: A Year in Review

1. What did you do in 2020 that you’d never done before?
I wish I could say I did more, but tbh the only thing I really got of any note is that I lived through a pandemic. I guess smaller things that I did for the first time include going to Disneyland for the first time, learning how to edit green screen content, making beef wellingtons for the first time, taking shrooms, and not getting seasick while sailing. Those things count too, right?

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions?
I can’t remember if I even made any resolutions!

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not anyone super close, but one ex-colleague did!

4. Did anyone close to you die?
I’m really thankful to say no to this one, especially after the year we had.

5. What countries did you visit?
I barely even left Nevada, must less the country

6. What would you like to have in 2021 that you lacked in 2020?
The ability to safely travel.

7. What dates from 2020 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Probably Valentines Day, because it was the first time my girlfriend and I said “I love you.” Definitely the weekend of March 7-8 when the two of us when exploring San Diego together…the weekend before things went into shut down.

8. What was your biggest achievement(s) of the year?
I mean, honestly? Just making it out of this year alive and with a roof over my head. There were too many times where I was worried about both.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I don’t know that I did enough this year to have any failures. I don’t mean that in a cocky way… I mean I barely did anything this year, it feels. So there was nothing to fail at.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing major, really. After AVNs in January, I got really sick for a week or two, but that was it. The worst part is that I didn’t even GO to the AVN show!!

11. What was the best thing you bought?
I tried not to buy a lot this year, but I think the best things I did purchase were all gifts for other people.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
The people who actually listened to what science was telling us about COVID, wore their masks, stayed home as much as possible, and found ways to make things work.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Oof. Too many peoples’. Any time I’d go to the store and someone wasn’t wearing their mask correctly. Anyone who voted for Trump.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Moving expenses. Moving out of my apartment and into the new house was way more expensive than I had planned and honestly it put me back a bit more than I hoped it would. In the end, it’s definitely worth it. But whew. there went way too much of my savings account!

15. What did you get really, really, excited about?
Despite everything going on, quite a few things! At the beginning of the year, I went to Disneyland with my GF & a friend, and I got like… really excited for that. I was super excited for my Valentine’s Day surprise that I planned for my girlfriend. Of course I was really excited to go to San Diego with my girlfriend since it was her first time going. Basically I just got really excited to do a lot of cool stuff involving my girlfriend.

16. What song will always remind you of 2020?
I always hate this question because I really don’t know. I’m not that musical enough to know

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? Despite it all, happier.
b) thinner or fatter? About the same, I think.
c) richer or poorer? Poorer, financially. Richer in other ways, though.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
I’m not sure. I did a lot of things that pushed me out of my comfort zone and I tried my hardest to maintain those things. With a year like 2020, I think I did the best that I could, and while I do wish I had done more of a lot of things, I know it was a year where I just wasn’t always as capable as I used to be.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
I’m not really sure.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent Christmas cooking with my girlfriend in our beautiful new kitchen. It was just the two of us, and it was as perfect as it could be. We video called with my parents, cooked, ate delicious food, watched movies, and cuddled a LOT. It was exactly what I needed.

21. Did you fall in love in 2020?
I definitely did.

22. How many one-night stands?
None, for another year in a row! Between having an amazing girlfriend who satisfies me sexually and that whole not really into hookups anymore thing PLUS Covid… who had time or energy for one-night stands?!

23. What was your favorite TV program?
Oh gosh. I watched like a LOT of TV this year. More than I think I ever have. Watchmen was so damn good. Lovecraft Country is excellent. Obviously the Baby Yoda show. I feel like I’m missing a couple that I really enjoyed….

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
I haven’t spent enough time with anyone to end up hating them.

25. What was the best book you read?
2020 was another year of trashy reads, but I did finally make time to read a YA series that a friend told me about, and that was surprisingly good. JVN’s book was a good read too.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I got really into Meg Thee Stallion this year. And on the opposite side of the spectrum, a lot of instrumental music.

27. What did you want and get?
I wanted to move into a bigger place that was maybe a step up from my apartment, and now here I am!

28. What did you want and not get?
I wanted to travel. I had booked a trip to Mexico with a friend of mine for June that we canceled. I was really hoping to take two trips this year, like international trips, so I was pretty sad that I wasn’t able to do either.

29. What was your favorite film of this year?
I can barely remember what all I watched this year, much less pick a favorite.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 33! I don’t think we did much on my birthday itself, but my girlfriend & I did go out to eat for the first time during covid. She also planned a socially distanced picnic with two of our closet friends, which was definitely the highlight of my birthday week. And we had a Mac & cheese off with another set of close friends (we all got tested first).

31.What was one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Oh gosh. Just one thing?? Lmao. Fine. I’ll keep it general: If everyone listened to and believed scientists, followed their guidelines & suggestions, and just stayed fucking home.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2020?
I basically lived in my bath robe this year sooooooooooooo

33. What kept you sane?
My cat, my girlfriend, my friends. I worked so hard this year to maintain friendships in a digital way, even though it was fucking hard. But I did it, and I’m really proud of myself.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Dr Fauci

35. What political issue stirred you the most?
SISEA, Covid, Presidential election

36. Who did you miss?
Literally all of my friends & my family. Not getting to see people in person is fucking HARD.

37. Who was the best new person you met?
Does my girlfriend’s dog count? Because I’m prettttttty sure I didn’t meet anyone new in 2020

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2020.
I learned a lot in 2020, but I think something I re-learned was the importance of friendships. 2020 was difficult for maintaining friendships, especially as someone who tends to do best with in person time with my friends. But I learned to make do with what was safe and possible by texting & calling friends more, and a lot more Skype/Facetime calls with friends & family.

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
As usual, I don’t really have one.
