Velvet Alley Edgar Plagued Doctor Review

Doctor Edgar is back!! Velvet Alley has started bringing back more of their original models, and I was thrilled to see that the plague doctor dildo is one of the models they’ve decided to return. Easily one of the more unique pieces on the market, Doctor Edgar or Edgar Plagued Doctor is an excellent addition to any toy collector’s shelves.

I’ve spent a lot of time talking about Velvet Alley, both here on my blog and on my PornHub channel, where Cassie & I previously made & posted several NSFW “using & reviewing” style videos any time we received new models. That’s to say that I’m not going to go in-depth talking about Velvet Alley as a brand. Today, I’m focusing on one thing, and one thing only: the Doctor Edgar dildo!

Meet Edgar

The Doctor Edgar dildo is a throw back to the iconic masks worn by plague doctors during the bubonic plague in 17th-century Europe, with a long, bird-like snoot. This tapered growth is gradual and semi-triangular in shape. Much like the plague doctors’ costume, Doctor Edgar also has a top hat, though it’s a much smaller version than what we see depicted in media. This Doctor Edgar model was originally named the Distinguished Doctor Edgar, as Velvet Alley previously had two different variations of Doctor Edgar.

This time, they’ve only got the one: Edgar Plagued Doctor.

As Velvet Alley is slowly reintroducing old models back into their available catalog, Edgar is only available in one size with a height of 6.75″ and a circumference that maxs out at 5″. The model I’ve got is from the original Distinguished Doctor Edgar, and is slightly larger and has circular texture in 4 small areas that the new model does not have. The circular texture resembles that of a sucker on a tentacle, with two circles on the top of the snoot and 2 on the bottom of the snoot. They’ve also switched their logo placement from the front of the hat to the top of the hat, adding a v-shaped indent on the top hat.

Edgar Plagued Doctor is available in Medium 00-50 or Soft 00-30 firmness with 20 different colors available, though Velvet Alley does state that they will do their best to accommodate special requests. My Doctor Edgar dildo is a medium firmness with a marbled combo of color numbers 2, 4 and 8, I believe. With the medium firmness, Edgar has really great squish and stands up straight without any leaning, bending or drooping.

Caring for Edgar Plagued Doctor

You won’t need a plague doctor mask to take care of Edgar, though you will need some soap! Specifically, some anti-bacterial soap that is unscented and not made with silicone. Wash the toy before and after each use. There is a lot of texture, so I recommend a small, soft toothbrush to help make cleaning a bit easier. No need to scrub, just gently brush in all the nooks and crannies before rinsing the soap off.

It’s recommended to only use water-based lubricant with Edgar. My favorite is System JO H2O original, but I also enjoy their H2O Jelly if you prefer a thicker texture lube.

Tips for Using Edgar

This plague doctor dildo is ready to give users a stretch! If you’re not used to stretching, it’s important to start slowly. Warming up is a huge help with stretching, so wearing a pussy plug or butt plug beforehand can help prepare your body. Using a vibrator to help warm up is also really helpful, particularly for those with a vulva.

Once you’ve warmed up and you’re ready to start using Edgar Plagued Doctor, add water-based lubricant to the tip and shaft of the toy, applying any extra lube directly to your hole(s). Slowly push the nose of the mask into your hole, taking time to get accustomed to the stretch before you start thrusting it in & out.

My Experiences with Edgar

Although both Edgar models from Velvet Alley did make the cut to bring with us to the Netherlands, I’ll admit that neither model gets as much use as some others in our collection. It’s not that either model is bad, it’s more that I prefer a bit more g-spot stimulation than this model provides. Because it’s been so long since I’ve used Edgar, I decided that I wanted start from scratch as best as I can. Which meant treating the dildo as if I’d never used it before and not rewatching my own NSFW review of the toy prior to writing this.

So that’s what I did. I grabbed my handy dandy bullet vibrator, a bottle of lubricant and Edgar Plagued Doctor, and got going. As I slid Edgar into myself, I could feel the stretch opening me up. I tried my hardest to position the toy so it was angled upwards into me, in hopes of getting some good g-spot stimulation, which did work but only at just the right depth.

What really drove me crazy each of the times I tried using Edgar again, was the texture. It’s raised at every edge: the top ridge plus the sides and the bottom of the “beak” all have textures and lots of of them. The top is where the triangle meets, forming a vertical ridge, with two small areas of horizontal texture with 2 sets of fasteners and buttons. The sides of the beak have little “x” stitching, as if holding the toy together. The bottom has gentle waves that start towards the bottom half of the shaft of the toy. Each surface has enough texture to perhaps also act as a surface to grind against, which wouldn’t be the first time that Velvet Alley has created an insertable toy that doubles as a grinder.

And yet, the texture never got to the point of overstimulating me during solo play. The texture exists, but it’s not so raised or so dramatic that it was too much for solo play. I also typically don’t do a lot of thrusting into myself during masturbation, instead, I prefer to insert a toy and rock my hips sort of up & down instead. This gives me a bit of a thrusting sensation, without it ever being too much. Edgar was the perfect texture for that!

When I asked my wife to use the unique dildo on me though… overstimulation happened quickly. The texture was just too much when the dildo was being pumped into me faster and deeper than what I’m capable of myself. I think it was a combination of the faux-stitching on the sides of the mask and the vertical ridge along the top. I’m really thankful the silicone is so soft and squishy, because whew, if it were any more firm, I wouldn’t have been able to bounce back in the same evening and be ready for more after a little cool down.

There’s a lot going on with the plague doctor mask dildo, and I was quickly reminded of how intense this dildo is for me to take. It’s a lot, and for me, being properly warmed up was a necessity to prevent overstimulation when the toy is being pumped in and out of me. Edgar Plagued Doctor has a lot of girth too, that I think adds to the intensity of the texture as well. For me, I preferred having someone thrust the dildo into me rather than using it solo, unless I wasn’t able to properly warm-up prior to penetration.

Pros:

  • Unique dildo design
  • Customize firmness and colors
  • Affordably priced
  • Body-safe silicone
  • Great for stretching
  • Lots of texture
  • Looks nice in a display case or on a bookshelf

Cons:

  • Shape & texture may be too intense for some
  • Only one size available
  • Soft silicone is sticky/tacky, so hair, lint, dust, etc do stick to the surface

My Final Thoughts on Edgar Plagued Doctor Dildo

Overall, I do like Edgar, and I think Velvet Alley really showcases their unique horror-inspired style with this model. The pour is gorgeous and I like the changes they’ve made to the mold since I originally got the Distinguished Doctor Edgar. I don’t know that those 4 circles really add or take away from the overall stimulation, as there is a lot going on texture-wise anyway. I like the overall thickness of the toy, especially in comparison to the original Doctor Edgar design.

For $39.99, even the slightly smaller size of Doctor Edgar that is now available still seems really worth it to me. Especially considering the fact that you can customize your firmness and color(s).

There is a lot of texture on Edgar Plagued Doctor and it can get to be too much very, very quickly if there’s no warm-up. I don’t think Edgar is a good option for beginners, as the texture isn’t a natural or realistic texture and there’s a lot of it. The stretch is also pretty significant, even with the taper. I’d suggest Edgar Plagued Doctor only to those who have used fantasy toys and/or have stretched before.
