Maia Nala Wand Massager Review

Hold my lube, dear readers. If you haven’t seen the Maia Nala wand vibrator yet, I’m about to blow your mind! Maia Nala is a personal massager that can be used cordless or corded.

Yea, you read that correctly. You can use it while it’s plugged in, or you can use it once the battery is charged!

Let’s Get To It! Meet Nala

Maia Nala is a full-size magic wand style vibrator with 50 total vibration choices: 5 intensities and 10 vibration functions. Maia is calling this “Touch Tempo Technology” that allows you to easily control the intensity of each vibration pattern. The device has 3 button controls and is light-weight (12.7oz / 0.79lbs / 360g). The wand is 12.8″ long and the head is 2.25″ in diameter, smaller than the Le Wand Rechargeable. It features a reinforced neck for stability and to allow for better pressure against the anatomy. The neck is not very flexible, and you do need to apply some pressure to force any movement.

It comes with two different cords: a USB cord for charging the device and a wall plug for plug & play. When used as a cordless wand, the vibrator has an IPX7 rating, meaning it can be fully submerged underwater. When used plugged in, it has pass-through power which allows it to vibrate at maximum intensity even while plugged in. The head is coated with body-safe silicone and the handle is made with ABS plastic.

Care Instructions for Maia Nala

Charing Nala is really easy: simply plug the USB cord into a port or charging block and insert the DC pin into the base of the handle. While charging, the middle button on the wand will flash. Once it’s fully charged, the light will glow steady. Charge time is 60 minutes, and has an estimated run time of 45 minutes, though you may have a higher or lower run time depending on intensity level.

Since the device is waterproof submersible when it’s not plugged in, you can wash it really easily too. Much easier than washing non-waterproof wands! Wash it with warm water and an unscented soap. Let it dry completely before you plug it into the wall, though.

How to Use Maia Nala

To turn on Maia Nala, press and hold the middle power button for 3 seconds. Once powered on, a quick press of the middle button will start cycling through the 10 vibration modes. The + & – buttons control the intensity of each mode. I’m thankful for the 3 button controls, as it makes going through the 50 different vibration options much, much easier. To turn the vibrator off, press and hold the power button.

Maia does specify that the wall plug is for plug and play, however the vibrator does still power on when it’s plugged in using the USB cord too. The USB cord isn’t super long, though, so in my opinion it’s not great for plug and play use.

My Experiences with Nala

When Peepshow Toys asked me if I’d like to test and review Nala, I was intrigued by the ability to use it while plugged in or cordless. Having another waterproof submersible wand option was appealing too. I like the Viben Sultry, but I hoped that Maia Nala would have a different kind of vibration. And it does. Sultry has rumbly vibrations on the low settings that become less rumbly as you increase intensity. Nala, however, has vibrations quickly become buzzy as you increase intensity, especially when it’s plugged in.

Because when Nala is plugged in, it feels more intense. It feels more powerful. It’s like an extra intensity, if you don’t mind having a shorter range of movement thanks to the cord. My favorite trick was to use an extension cord for more movement, but sometimes that also feels a little excessive and I occasionally misplaced the cord when grabbing it for other uses. Oops.

I don’t use wands that often when I’m pleasuring myself. Typically, wands get the most use either by Cassie on her own or during our sex. It’s not that I dislike wands, as I am slowly using them more and more on myself and having Cassie use them on me. I tend to prefer more pinpoint pleasure, and wands are notoriously not good at that.

One of the things that I’ve learned, thanks to the Maia Nala, is that when it comes to using wands on my anatomy, I much prefer having a barrier of clothing between my anatomy and the vibrator. Doubly so if the vibrations are buzzy. The power on Nala is just really punchy. The lowest setting feels very intense because the range of vibrations is pretty narrow and starts high.

I knew to expect little flexibility from the neck, but I didn’t realize just how rigid the neck would be. There’s very little flexibility and you really have to push it to bend the neck ever so slightly. This was a perk I didn’t expect! I am so used to having to push flexible neck vibrators’ handles away from my torso to get a good pressure, which doesn’t really feel great and my wrists end up a bit sore the next day. The firm, reinforced neck made it so I wasn’t pushing the handle away from myself. It was so much more comfortable! Not quite as comfortable as the Eternal Wand, but that’s also got a curved handle whereas Nala does not.

Really, the biggest problem that I have with Maia Nala is the noise. It’s loud. Yea, it’s powerful, but I think of the VIM by Fun Factory and I know that quiet & powerful can go together. The vibrations were audible outside of the room with the door closed, making it less discreet than both the VIM and Sultry.

There is minimal vibration transfer to the handle, and I feel it the most when powering on or off the vibrator. While the vibrations don’t transfer very much, you can feel the motor going in the handle, it’s just significantly less powerful. Oddly, I felt the most transfer at the far end away from the vibrator head.

I am a little disappointed to share that the head size is too small to use with any of the Le Wand attachments that I have in my collection. Technically, the top of the wand does fit inside the wand toppers, however the fit is very loose and prone to come off if you try using them.

Speaking of the head, Maia Nala has a very, very firm head. There is absolutely zero squish factor here, so if you like the squishy head on the Magic Wand Rechargeable, do not expect the same from this wand. The head is also textured, though significantly less so than the VIM. The texture is only on the sides of the head, without any texture on the top of the head.

When it came to using the Nala on Cassie, the rigid neck was really helpful while I was going down on her. I was able to hold it pressed against her perineum both while her legs were around my back and when her feet were on the bed, legs spread around me. She really enjoyed the deep vibrations of the Maia Nala, but she was always startled by the intensity of the power on the lowest setting. We both needed to feel properly warmed up before using Nala.

Pros:

  • 10 vibration modes with 5 vibration intensities each
  • Waterproof submersible
  • Can be used cordless or plugged in
  • Rigid neck makes positioning more comfortable
  • Affordably priced
  • Minimal vibration transfer to the handle
  • The head only has texture on the sides

Cons:

  • Head is too small for some wand attachments
  • Range of vibrations is short and starts strong
  • Noisy
  • Vibrations get more buzzy when plugged in
  • Very firm head may be too firm for some
  • Auto shut off at 30 minutes (cordless) / 40 minutes (plugged) and then can’t be turned on for 10 / 15 minutes

Final Thoughts on Maia Nala

Coming in at just $85.99 on Peepshow Toys, Nala is a really affordably priced magic wand vibrator. I like the plug and play or cordless capabilities and that it’s waterproof submersible. I wasn’t sure about the rigid neck but I ultimately do like it because it makes holding the wand and applying pressure much easier on my wrists. I wish I had attachments that fit the head and that it was a little quieter, but it’s hard to complain when this wand is so powerful.

Because of the vibrations starting so strong, I don’t think that Nala is an ideal wand for beginners or those who prefer gentle vibrations. There’s nothing gentle about this wand, and I think the firm head may be too much for beginners as well especially paired with the rigid neck. I’d urge anyone who has wrist issues when using wands to consider the Maia Nala because of that same neck.
